Mr Winterton is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Hand Surgeon. He studied at medical school in Newcastle upon Tyne, before pursuing basic surgical training in Yorkshire. He was then appointed to the prestigious Leeds/Manchester Plastic Surgery Registrar Training scheme where he spent six years developing clinical skills and undertaking an MPhil research degree into Peripheral Nerve Injury at the University of Manchester.
After his higher plastic surgery training was completed, he returned to Leeds to develop his interest in paediatric and microsurgical upper limb surgery, which culminated in being part of the surgical team which performed the first hand transplant in the UK in December 2012. He was enteredonto the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in February 2013
He then travelled to Adelaide, Australia, and spent one year as senior registrar at the Flinders Medical Centre. He was able to hone all aspects of his plastic and hand surgeryrepertoire, including major trauma reconstruction, hand and nerve surgery, microsurgical reconstruction of the complex wound and skin cancer management.
Since returning to the UK in February 2014, he has worked as Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Hand Surgeon at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. He also works at Salford Royal Infirmary, and Trafford General Hospital within the NHS. He is a founding member of the Manchester Hand Centre, which has the goal of centralising and driving excellence in NHS hand surgery across Manchester.
He completed the British Hand Diploma in 2015 at Manchester University and now teaches candidates on the programme. He teaches higher surgical trainees as a matter of course, and has presented work both nationally and internationally for many years. He has published several book chapters and peer reviewed articles, and is involved in the assessment of higher surgical trainees nationally.
Mr Winterton’s areas of particular interest are complex and microsurgical limb reconstruction in both adults and children, and he undertakes this alongside managing all common hand conditions including trauma and emergencies.
